Today will be spent exploring Avignon, the largest city in the region rich in spiritual history. Avignon was the seat of the Catholic popes from 1309 to 1377 remaining under Papal rule until 1791 where it became a part of France. This city is synonymous with its cobbled medieval streets and ancient city wall. You will decide how you prefer to spend the morning and day here in this ancient city. You may choose to visit the Palace of the Popes which is one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe dating from AD 1252; or one of this city’s best local museums Musee de Petit Palais, and/or take a slow and investigative walk on its cobbled streets photography historical architectural gems.
Lunch will be had at our other Michelin Star luxury Boutique Hotel La Mirande @la_mirande with views overlooking the ancient Papal Palace. We will enjoy some time here at this luxurious hotel built during the prosperous era of the Renaissance period savouring its ambience and charming historical décor.
We will take a slow drive taking in the view of the Pont Saint-Benezet (also known as the Pont d’Avignon) which is a medieval bridge across the Rhone River as we travel home. This local treasure, built in 1234, originally had 22 stone arches but only 4 remain today and has since been classified as a World Heritage Site
Dinner will be enjoyed back at our Provincial home.
